Transition

At the beginning of the semester, a large group of faculty and staff participated in a demonstration of a new learning management system, or LMS, called Brightspace by the company D2L. The response from the group was overwhelmingly positive, and the university decided to proceed with implementing the system for the fall 2024 term. Brightspace will replace Moodle as the university's LMS.

Timeline

Please refer to the Project Timeline on the home page for the most up-to-date information about the LMS implementation.

Typically, new Moodle shells are available to faculty in mid-July. ITS is working with D2L to make Brightspace courses available sooner than mid-July so faculty have the maximum amount of time to acclimate to the new LMS and prepare for fall classes.

The transition will require an investment of time from each faculty member moving course content from Moodle to Brightspace, and the amount of time necessary is to be determined. Once there is a better understanding of the process, it will be shared with everyone.

Communication

Additional communication regarding Brightspace training dates for faculty, key project plan dates, and other details will be communicated via email, and this landing page will serve as a repository for updates, frequently asked questions, timelines, and early documentation sources.

The Brightspace LMS is an exciting technology to bring to the university, offering new opportunities for transformative teaching and learning for courses across disciplines and in all modalities. Frequent communication will be forthcoming over the next several weeks as the conversion process begins, and opportunities for the community to participate and learn more about Brightspace will be shared.
